Puzzle

If yesterday hadn't come,
we wouldn't have had the chance
to weave our fingers into a web
under this velvet sky, hidden,
with butterflies in our stomachs, whispering
"even if tomorrow never comes,
never let go"

We would've never been able
to try to show the world that our love
is a puzzle harder to break
than any tangled headphones,
with just our fingers;

But tomorrow came.
It showed me that the bond
between two lives, even when entangled
like cheap headphones,
can be cut with the right pair of scissors.

And today, years later, I'm still stuck:
I'm stuck at this window, gazing
at this velvet sky and its crushing pressure,
wearing out all hope of tranquility reaching
past the smog of industrial growth --

I'm stuck in an empty apartment,
with only $90 worth of rum to keep me company,
still spending all my time in yesteryears.
Still whispering, "don't ever let me let you go"
despite you not being here.

But truthfully?
The only wish I really have left
is that today is the day
when everything ends --

That today is a place
that tomorrow
can never reach.

Prompts:

Two lives
don't let go
secret whispers
velvet crush
if tomorrow never comes
