My country (spoken word)

by Yakari Gabriel   Jul 23, 2014

1.he said :
dang girl, look at those thighs. wow come here.
(I was walking alone)

2. he said:
Why do you have that face? did they throw you away?
tell me, I'll pick you up.
(I kept walking)

3.he said:
Well whatever, don't look then. You ain't that pretty anyways.

My body is my country, its the only place I have to live in,
and just like every other country in the world it has restrictions and laws you have to comply to enter and stay there. But some men don't get that. Some men walk around thinking we owe them something, believing our country is theirs to take. Always so ready to invade and claim.

I hate to break the bad news, but both me and your daughters are growing up in a world filled with fear.
where men with common names like John, Juan, Jay, Marco..

Will call them everything except the name you gave them. They'll name them bae, baby, darling, sugar, mami..and even things with no vocals like psssssssst.

and where will they run to?
when they forget their own names because men on the street have called them everything.

To later say it was their fault,
Girl don't love your country too much. Who told you to be so free and so comfortable?

When you love where you live and showcase it,
they'll protest. And why lie? The lust of men
is as thick as the human desire to sin, we can't set
our countries free. We won't win.
