Attitudes.

by Poet on the Piano   Aug 8, 2014

But if you can't live for now,
for one moment relinquishing anxious stares
and scattered footprints and heartbeats
that crescendo...

if you can't be happy you are alive,
and that yes, there is more than this
though at this emphatic second you are meant to
do instead of contemplate...

if you can't wear capris and baseball caps
and bust out a ratty radio from the garage and
build melodies from whistling blades of grass...

if you can't smile into inimitable sunshine,
knowing no matter the heat that it loves you,
that you don't have to feel trapped like
there is a ploy to encage your recovering mind...

if you can't remember to live, spending your
thoughts not on technology and ways to improve,
if you can't forget to dwell on today before it
retires into its motley crib...

then please, go inside and sleep within four
white walls,

and wake up tomorrow with a desire to live.

Maryanne, to me this is a masterpiece and one of the best poems I've read so far in my years on this site. I'll start out by saying the title is used well because "attitudes" can mean a lot of different things. But here I believe it is very blunt and straightforward. Starting off with "but" pulls you into the story right away. And what a powerful line to start out with. The story enfolds and flows well. Each stanza is riveting and tells a different scene each time. The story itself is interesting to me. It encapsulates the emotions so well. The main character you could say is concerned about their close loved one or friend. The imagery you can hear and see. You can hear the concerns. You just want this person to live (like they used to). And isolate in a padded room. And come back stronger than ever! Excellent!

I really liked the message in this poem. Reminds me of my dad actually. Great job!
