Give and Take

by lonelynow   Aug 24, 2014

I hired a cellist, for you.
Spent hours reading and
Choosing poetry, for you.
I rang seven different women
And, as I bit into bitter
Sweet lemon pie, I knew
I had found the one
For you.

I have cried, for you.
In the car, in the shop,
All through the night, for you.
Twisting your wedding ring,
Round my finger, stealing
Scent from your drawers -
I have cried hot tears,
For you.

I gathered your friends, for you.
I found six young men
To shoulder your weight
For you. Wearing the smiles
We save for best, we sang,
Publically declared our love,
And stretched out our arms,
For you.

I chose a mahogany box
And you were laid in it.
My hand laid still on your
Brass fittings. I stroked
Your name, grief-blinded,
But all the while I knew:

You have done far more for me
Than I could ever do, for you.
