Wodahs

by JaneDoeWrites   Oct 9, 2014

"I couldn't string a sentence
together to bother her,
I instantly forgot all my plans
and started to follow her."

---

I am your
inky doppelganger,
the tempo of your
footsteps along the city
streets have synchronized
themselves with the beat
of my translucent heart- where
rays of sunlight grant me a
momentary taste of life
before you slip off
into the subway.

I am your
copycatting extension,
following your strides
like an instinctual calling
that I cannot refuse to
answer, dissipating into
the murky depths of night
until a morning sun requests
my presence once again.

A plagiarized existence;
an unnoticeable reflection,
forever limited to the boundaries
of your body-

I am your
prisoner.

*A/N: For a writing prompt- write the in POV of your shadow. Inspired by the song "I Never Knew You" by Cage.*

I have to say that I fell completely in love with your title at first. I never would have thought to have used a backwards title, so unique! I first thought it was some word that I had never seen before but then I was like, wait a minute... omg, so clever! <3

This poem, as usual, is completely breathtaking. Your words always flow so naturally, I'm instantly jealous every time I read a new piece of yours!! You have a true gift, girl.

The opening dialogue was a nice touch, almost like the shadow was star-stuck by her at first sight, wanting to speak to her but too afraid so it just followed her every move.

I love how each stanza starts off with an description of what a shadow could be called: a doppelganger, copycat, plagiarizer... all three describe a shadow perfectly. Shadows are the exact replica of you, copy your every single move. So cleverly used!

I love the ending too, how the shadow is their prisoner, forever bound to them, can never escape because the shadow is just a copy of themselves.

Beautiful work, I nominated this piece and I was so glad to see that it got an HM. Congrats, pretty girl!

I loved this approach to the challenge too, I really like how you opened the poem with that little short stanza, and it held a really quick and catchy rhythm to it!

I love your word choices throughout this poem, such as copycatting and doppelganger... what brilliant words to use to describe a shadow, and yet so simple when you really think about what a shadow is. Well done for connecting those together and making it so unique.

I really love this poem, and I love you have even used plagiarism as another comparison, which is something we all are aware of through poetry, and yet we do not realise how often we perhaps do it to others in real life - copying what they wear, buy, eat, say, etc... usually from the people we are closest to, like best friends etc. Anyway, to use this word for the shadow, was just great, I really liked that approach.

I also think your title is very clever, backwards titles would never have crossed my mind to attempt, and I would not have thought they would have made it likeable to read, but it does work so well!

    Really good job, well done!
