Right away this title truly interests me as I live in my past as well and can relate well.

First: This stanza takes your breath away as there is a lot going for it. The past shouldn't be in your present as that is why it is called the past. But with it haunting you it tends to seep through and it can mean that you are being affected everyday. I loved the use of shadow, that's really what it is. A shadow that you cannot escape from.

Second: Nightmares are seeping into your dreams and there is nothing you can do. I liked the
wording/metaphors here though. The sun is represented as the happiness you once had. And the sea is the sorrow you are feeling now, you are drowning in that sea.

Third/ending- Freedom is something that is difficult to come by within mental illness. Whether to do or die, if you do something you feel is right and it's wrong you end up feeling way worse then you do. I love the ending as well, such simple imagery that turns into a huge thing. You wonder why you did survive the pain of your past and why you are still alive. Love this a lot hon. Great write. 5/5

After reading this poem, I can so relate to it. There are days when my past still makes me depressed. The choices I made etc. You have captured it well. You have done a great job =D
