Shadow Friend

If only for tonight,
I wish you would stop running
away from the past and take
time to see what is truly
behind you.

I have been chasing you
since the first day you were
able to walk, but in time
your walk turned into
a run I could never manage.

You sprint away from me
like I am a spider waiting
to weave you inside my web,
but all I ever wanted from you
was to try and be your friend.

For it is I who keeps running
with you, even though I never win.
It is I that lives in darkness,
whilst trying to guide you
towards the light.

And it is I who has always
stood behind you, ready
to catch you when you fall.

So if only for tonight,
I wish you would stop running,
and for once in your life
begin to trust the shadow
who follows your every
footstep.

    Shadows can definitely be our friends too, I love how you wrote this though. You seem to be saying that the shadow is part of the past, but it's really not, all the shadow wants is to be it's owners friend. The second stanza talks about being there from the beginning olf birth. And since then the shadow has grown fond but the human keeps running away. Shadows only live in darkness and they are just there to protect their human. Overall, I loved this a lot. There were a lit of ways that you could have gone with this, but you give the shadow the 'spotlight' and made it a main character. You gave the shadow a sparkling and kind hearted personality despite what most people think about shadows. Great write.
