Shadow Child

by Baby Rainbow   Oct 18, 2014

I was there with you
on your first day of school,
but you cast me away
as if you were ashamed.

I was there with you
whenever things went wrong,
but you scowled at me
like it was all my fault.

I stayed with you
through every late walk home,
yet you always kept on walking
like you'd rather have been alone.

I danced with you
and learned all of your moves,
until the pain of rejection
began to feed my soulless heart.

And now I find myself
unwillingly attached
to the ever growing distance
that is keeping us apart.

Such a painful read, yet so compelling.

To me it comes across as an estranged parent, wanting to part of a child's life yet being rejected. As if the child blames the parent for walking out and will not allow them back in for fear of further hurt.

With the final stanza it is as if the parent feels that this growing apartness is their well deserved punishment and they will embrace it as such.

    A very emotional write.

This definitely seems like a personal poem. Someone was not there for you when you were younger, and as you grew older you felt like you became more invisible to the world. You isolated and unattached yourself from the world. Or honestly it might just be about your shadow, how it was there for you every step of the way, but I definitely think it is deeper than that. I cannot do this poem justice by leaving a long comment, but overall this is a difficult poem to read. Feel of heart and emotion. 5/5
