Ghosts Within

by cassie hughes   Oct 20, 2014

In depth of night, when shadows beckon souls
to risk their all with tendril wisps of mist,
I walk through halls as silent as the tomb
and wish the company I knew were by my side.
A shiver runs its fingers down my spine,
as age old memories return with every glimpse
of times gone by, revealed in ancient splendour
by the candle born aloft in trembling hand.

A sound.
A softly sighing wind runs through the air.
I turn.
And all the past appears before my aching heart.
I fall.

To knees now aged and unused to such abuse
and which will one day soon bend for their last.
Here, in this place I once called home, my dreams
call forth the ones I used to know and cow'ring
under each and every stare I see my life
laid open for their view and tremble at the very thought.

In depth of night I wander here alone
and shadows beckon to my soul to heed
their call and join them in the twilight mists
between the waking and eternal rest.
In longing for the days gone by I watch,
as shade detaches, flies and then is gone
to join the multitude of restless souls within these walls.

I like the way you used the very first sentence to set the scene for this piece and then you repeated that sentence throughout the rest of the piece. Also the second stanza not being formatted the way the other three are gives it just the power it needed to keep up with the piece and still stand out leaving such a beautiful imprint on the minds of the audience members. Your voice is elegantly shining here - I love the feel that created braided nicely within the imagery. Great piece, so glad you added it to the comment thread!
