I Walk Alone

by Once an Angel   Nov 5, 2014

In the majestic piney mountains cold,
caressed by the drifts of falling snow,
the flakes settle on my warm skin,
full of beating, pulsing life,
melting into tracks of tears,
as my footprints trail behind me,
I walk alone.

On the ocean's roaring border,
strewn with rocks turned grains of sand,
shells pressed into it like mortar,
glass glimmering among the washed debris,
polished soft and clouded by salted waves,
that whisper songs of endless days to me,
I walk alone.

In the lush blanket of forest,
my figure framed in earthy emerald light,
leaves chattering under my steps,
as animals flee before my humanity,
I breathe in the musky living dying air,
the wind brings across my muddy path,
I walk alone.

In the city's continuous manufactured light,
beating with the nocturnal might of mortals,
autumn's chill creeps into my jacket's guard,
as I pat along the expanse of greying pavement,
and pause at red hands, waiting for white figures to appear,
the weariness sinks its teeth into my worn feet,
I walk alone.

Into the quiet stone of a candle lit sanctuary,
my steps echo on the ancient floor,
I see walls gilded with artistic depictions of salvation,
from a great god upon a heavenly throne,
I travel along the empty pews glowing with stained colors,
unsaid prayers choking my throat into silence,
I walk alone.

Among the polished, glinting tomb stones,
my ghostly feet fail to crush the grass below them,
I wondering through graves of lives past,
their bodies long since reclaimed by life's circle,
I see one unadorned, marking my time of existence,
and fall to my knees at this lasting testament of all the days,
I walked alone.

I was very really amazed by the metaphors within this poem, they created such vivid imagery that really kept an interesting scene painted in my mind whilst reading this poem. The author has used such unique descriptions to capture minor details and make them such a big part of the story. This poem is a very visual work of art, it has been constructed very well. The title was also repeated throughout the poem at the end of each stanza, which really drew each stanza together and kept each image connected to the tone of the poem, loneliness. Very well created poem.

This poem really is outstanding. Your descriptions and metaphors are so unique, creative and so interesting!

There is a lot to take in from the poem, it has so much detail to it, a lot of imagery to grasp, but I do hope people will stop by the poem and give it the time it needs to read it, it is a very powerful poem.

I love the "form" of the poem, where you use that repeated line, which is also the title, and keep it the same until that last verse, it worked really well and made a big impact on the emotion of loneliness and depression.

    Great write!

Thank you for taking time to write your kind review. When I am not writing a meaning analysis for class, I look forward to taking time to read some of your own poetic words.
