Once Fooled, Twice Shamed

by Baby Rainbow   Nov 8, 2014

I don't know why I'm scared
when I know we've been here before,
fooled once by your cheap apologies
and betrayed by your heartless hug.

Nerves rumble in my stomach
at the mention of your name,
remembering every word, every lie,
and every excuse you ever made -
every attempt to buy my forgiveness!

But as the old saying whispers
around the world:

"Fool me once, shame on you,
Fool me twice, shame on me."

Your second chance will never be,
because never again
will you get so close to me!

Great poem, Saff! The perpetrator is the one who should be shameful! Not the victim!! The victim was being overpowered and controlled and has nothing to be ashamed of!

It is not the victim's fault that they could not stand up to the perpetrator and there is always hope within the victim that the perpetrator might be genuinely remorseful!
