Vodka

by Baby Rainbow   Nov 8, 2014

The familiar scent
reaches my nose
and I instantly regret
opening the bottle.

Look but do not touch!

The first sip
drowns my taste-buds
with unvisited memories.

Powerless
to the seduction of
it's healing promises,
I crumble under temptation
as I watch the bottle
become half empty.

The taste of sanity
returns to my lips
and tingles my tongue
with sweet relief.

People might say this holds some kind of metaphor, but I do not think so. Alcoholism is nothing to joke at. As Maryanne said, the title drew me in as well, because it is not a topic a lot of people dare to journey into. But you did well. I believe the first stanza says a lot of this poem. "Familiar sent" is referring to you have smelled this a lot of times before. So you have dealt with alcohol before or someone else was a heavy drinker. "Look but do not touch" I love this this line, so much. You don't want to touch because you know what will happen. But you give into temptation. We all need a coping mechanism. And that sweet taste comes rushing back to you. 5/5

I have to admit, the title drew me in haha. Just the smell of vodka is so pungent and sharp. My brother drinks this all the time, mixing it with drinks. I like your phrase of "look but do not touch" as it can relate to many things in life that tempt us, where we may want to indulge but it is not wise to.

One suggestion: can't "taste-buds" be written as one word "taste buds", without the dash?
Also, third stanza: "it's" should be "its".

It's unique as well how you refer to its seduction, that's neat. I love the ending, the verb "tingle" and the idea of sanity having a taste. It makes me ponder the reasons why we drink or why we even picked up the bottle, what our real intention was.

This is very different, Saffie! I like it very much, although I am sure you are aware why it might worry me!

However, I can understand why you have written it! Nice imagery!
