Reflections of a Lonely Picture

by cassie hughes   Nov 11, 2014

I see you through the rain.
Watching as I float within my
greyed out world.
You, who has a rainbow
full of colour to surround
your smiling life,
Yet see it not.
I see reflections in your face,
of those emotions
you would hide
behind. In mirror image
to the water that surrounds
me. Both below and from above.
You stare.
And turn your head
as if to listen to the
falling rain that patters on the lake
and try to comprehend
my mired state.
Emotions swamp us both.
Yet I am fixed within
what I can not escape
so do not try.
I must remain.
Ensnared within this dreary frame I cannot pass.
But you.
You have the means to walk
or run away.
To fill your life with colour,
sound and light and boundless joy.
To you I would say, leave.
Open the door and take that needed step.
Begone.
The canvas of your life awaits.

First of all, thank you so much for participating in the challenge, Cassie! Your poem is amazing, so much emotion behind it.

I like how you incorporated the title of the painting into the title of your poem - very clever. :)

The painting is of a man who looks beaten down, very somber... the rain is falling down as he rows his boat in the cold, dreary swamp. You definitely captured the emotion in your poem that is portrayed in the picture.

You described the man watching the people who are studying him... seeing a world of rainbows, different colors surround them while his is nothing but gray. He knows that he cannot escape this misery, he is trapped within this frame. Yet, he has hope that the people who watch him will go out and live a colorful life, one that he has been denied.

"The canvas of your life awaits."

    - I love your ending, that is truly beautiful and inspiring!
