Broken Spirit

by Ren   Nov 20, 2014

I am a broken spirit,
Within a hollow shell,
As I hide away from all the pain,
The abuse,
And the betrayal.

My hope is slowly fading,
My soul is bleak and dark,
My faith is suddenly shaking,
The disappointment left its mark.

But I refuse to walk around,
With my heart out on my sleeve,
I refuse to hang my head in sorrow,
I refuse to show the broken me.

Instead I wear a mask,
I wear it just for you.
I will not bring you down,
And I will not let you through.

I will smile and I will laugh,
I will beam with love and joy.
I will brighten your day when you most need it,
I will trick you with my stealth and coy.

Then when the day has finally faded,
And the exhausting night falls,
My mask is taken off,
And I'm not okay at all.

My heart is nearly shattered,
My emotions are worn thin,
My body trembles uncontrollably,
My mind is full of sin.

I battle with tears I cannot cry,
My voice will not shout or scream,
And the inability to release this pain,
Follows me into my dreams.

There is no escape,
And I hide so you can't see,
The absolute agony,
That writhes inside of me.

I am a broken spirit,
Within a hollow shell,
I place this mask upon my face,
With not much else to tell...

Life is Lessons In Failed Events. Lesson learned saves a future blame. Truth acknowledged is hope reached for. Within every scar, healing dwells.

Ren, this is a beautifully thought out piece because it's full of real, raw yet inner emotions that have seeped out whilst you write. The rhythm and thyme are perfect.
Depression in such an hard thing to overcome even with the right person around because we want to protect those that we love thus hiding behind the mask (painted smile usually) but like you say once that person is no longer there our masks are able to come off and we can be full of darkness once more, unfortunately. You paint that picture so perfectly and many people (including me) can relate to this.

    All the best, Em

      Hey Em,
Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it so much!!
Depression can be such a hard thing to overcome. And you're right about wanting to protect those we love. Of course they are absolutely worth it...but it can take such a heavy toll on the spirit and mind.
Thank you so much once again and I hope you are doing well!
      Take care!

This is an incredibly well rhymed piece of sad poetry that flows beautifully.
It takes real strength to face our demons, let alone do it successfully and then be strong enough to help others too.
Great write, all the best and stay well,

      Hey Ben!
Thank you so much for reading and for your comment. I appreciate it as always :)
It does take a lot of strength to face our demons...and can be so overwhelming and painful...but the people I do it for are absolutely worth it.
Thanks again and I hope you're doing well.
