Quiet Girl

by Baby Rainbow   Dec 29, 2014

There's a girl in my class
with secrets in her eyes,
and I don't understand
why she always looks so sad.

She says her father beats her -
but no one believes her words,
though I have seen the bruises
and the scars upon her skin.

Her father drops her off
by the school's entrance gates,
the weight of his stare
lies heavy on my heart.

His voice is always angry
and I never see him smile.
I begin to understand
the silence of my friend.

I catch her tear drops in my heart
as my young mind tries to contemplate,

how can one heart go so wrong...

...and how can one child be so very sad?

Argh, I understand now, Saffie! Mind you, I almost had it, lol - I did suggest the possibility of a violent parent!
Anyway, enough bragging about what I almost deduced and to the poem.
Should certainly be read first as it is the story behind her death, and a couple of very powerful poems, which can also be read to great effect singularly (as I am aware!)
All the very best and well done.

There are a lot of kids who have one friend like this or they are that kid. Sad to say most kids are on one side or the other of this equation and you did a wonderful job portraying that; however you made it so heartbreaking to read. I'm not going to say which pair of shoes I am in, but you definitely gave me a look at the other side. Thank you for penning this, I hope whatever inspired it is not so close to your heart as it feels. Beautifully penned.
