A Heart's Redemption Heard

by Michael D Nalley   Jan 22, 2015

He only touched her heart with a stethoscope
before this physician would prescribe a pill.
All who cared about her were filled with the hope
that she would be healed by his medical skill.
If only she had listened to her own heart
before psychological stress took its toll
Rhythm would have remained steady on her chart
if her mind had listened to her tortured soul.
All's well that ends well, or so it often seems
Sorrow's the antidote arresting toxin,
that too often gets into our blood streams.
We need protection from original sin
The doctor heals while our Savior redeems

I am also interested in this poem because of the way you made it seem like those who are suffering from depression have a tortured soul. At least, I believe that you are using depression from the word "sorrow"; that is typically what comes up when I think of that word.

"If only she had listened to her own heart
before psychological stress took its toll"

^These two verses are really interesting to me, because of the way that you associated stress with the heart. I like how you made it sound like she could have stopped this from happening if she only listened...

This poem is also interesting because of the way that you associate a mood disorder (assuming its depression) with sin. I have never thought of it that way, but it is plausible.
