What is Love??? (English sonnet)

by Robert Gardiner   Feb 16, 2015

This is a sonnet I wrote, that dates back to at least 2001. I recently rediscovered it on an old poetry page of mine, on a poetry site I was with previously and I decided to revamp it and share it with you. Let me know what you think;

What is Love??? (English sonnet)

What is Love, if it's not given freely?
How much can it, truly, be worth to us.
To hold onto love, it is, not easy,
But, much worse, to have it forced, upon us.
Love should be, a mutually shared thing.
No good to, unrequited, affection.
Fulfillment, Happiness, it does not bring.
Rejection remains, yet still, rejection.
Whether not, we choose, to see it, that way,
Their love, still, something that we can not have.
We can cry, we can plead, and we can beg,
But we can't hold their love, with naught, to grab.
See, Love's only worth it, if it is, shared.
What is love, if someone's Heart is not there???

Best sonnet I read in here. You nailed the meaning behind. It is full of power in expressing what love should be like.
" Love should be, a mutually shared thing." so true, it cant be love when the other side is not on the same page. It should be nurtured by two for it to become real; for it to survive.

A piece I know I will visit more often.

    Thank you for sharing it!

As I read many divine English sonnets of yours, I can say that it's not the prettiest, still very neatly penned.

The ability to maintain the 10 syllable count in harmony with smooth rhyming scheme in of itself a great work. I think it's very confusing for myself, writing many lines of the same syllable count.

Thank you for sharing, always a pleasure.

When I first wrote it GB. I felt it lack the beauty, of which I'm enamored and strive to write with, but because it spoke truth and said something of consequence. I felt I need it to keep it and give it life. It might lack the classic beauty, I usually strive for, but it has a message some need to here.
