Rescued

When you came into my life
I thought I was rescuing you,
but the truth I learned was that
you were rescuing me.

I was young and naive,
lost and insecure,
only beginning to find my way
in a world I did not know,
but as soon as I attached your lead and collar
and stepped out that door,
I knew I would never be
locked inside agoraphobia again.

I knew you would change my life forever,
but I could never have dreamed
that you would change it this much.

I didn't realise you had the power to change me,
by giving me the chance to change you.
You see, you were quickly labelled
by people who didn't know you,
but that's okay, for I was once labelled too.

I am proud of the journeys you have taken me on,
and forever grateful for the guidance
you have constantly given me.

You are my rock of armour,
my map when I get lost,
my smile when I feel blue
and my inspiration to follow my dreams through.

You have taught me well,
and in return,
I was able to teach you too.

I thought I had rescued you,
but now I know it was you
who came to rescue me!
