Sleep Another Way

by Cantchangeme   May 9, 2015

As another sun rises
On another broken daughter
Overdose or gunshot
Born to the slaughter
Maybe it was a prison stay
Or a knife finally caught her
Choked on the rohypnol
Drowned under white water

She's a pin cushion for a city
That fashions new needles for play
And she looks in the mirror
And tries to make the image go away
She makes plans for a new life
Which burn at the end of everyday
If you put her in the ground go deep
Let her sleep another way

It takes an embalmer to clean her
And an undertaker to close her eyes
As they lower her to her sleep
Not one of her friends sits and cries
In their hearts they no they're next
Soon it will be there sun on the rise
They make promises to each other
They'll escape this city with their lives

The six of us that made that pact
There's only three of us that breathe
Only one daughter left in the city
Stayed to fight against its disease
We ran because we were beaten
The city had us broken on our knees
Leaving this hell hole to write its book
Filled up with a thousand stories like these

"There's no sleep in Madison tonight
We buried you beneath the ground today
We'll stay up tonight and remember
Beautiful girl, sleep another way"

- Me (aged 13).
