The Slip and Speed Slide

by Shelley Williams   May 11, 2015

The day proved to be warm
with the shine of the sun,
The ice was melting quickly
as the cold season was done.

The slip and slide was put
on top of our grassy hill,
We oiled it with dish soap
and awaited a speed thrill.

Timmy was ready to run
and slide across the lawn,
The plastic was so slick
within a second he was gone.

He flew through the fence
that lined our property,
Into the neighbor's garden,
he went flying right past me.

There was no time to stop
the recklessness of speed,
Nobody knew the dish soap
would oil up the tall weed.

We ran inside the house
but when we peek outside,
Our neighbor stood in shock
of a garden once his pride.

He remembered the bloom
of the perfect white rose,
The same lay on the ground
in a new wilt hanging pose.

It was time to face him
for the dish soap dispense,
The wood pointed our way
with a hole shape in the fence.

The bottle lay in his yard
along with shredded plastic,
My son was still in a daze
but thought the ride fantastic.

The garden was in hurrah
with a chance of slip and fall,
We watched the neighbor
glide across into a crawl.

We knew he would be angry
when he was on steady feet,
Sorry was said and meant
for the slip and slide cheat.

Clean up became our job
in the yard where we play,
We also mended our fence
and worked the garden all day.
