Death Hides in Darkness

by Rob   Jun 26, 2015

I am broken and no one can fix me,
For darkness is cast deep in my soul,
Where the shadows and spirits dwell,
And now they are calling me back home...

A lifetime of dreams slowly shattered,
One by one they all have died,
No answers in the search for my destiny,
Just memories of all the tears that were cried...

Darkness seeks to conceal inhibitions,
There are no signs of inherited traits,
Everyone seeking something for nothing,
It is in this darkness where for me they still wait...

Frightening dreams that forfeit all truths,
Haunted lies just the way of the game,
Lurking in darkness death hides and it waits,
No decisions on whom is the blame...

Happiness in this mind just an illusion,
In the heart of the shadowed soul,
The only thing now that is worth waiting for,
Is for death to call me back home...

So here I am please take me,
I am broken and cannot be repaired,
Shadows fall through the cracks just the same,
There is no one here who will care...

Chastised beyond all recognition,
Their biased ways show just how deep,
Even for those who have known me,
The tears run red down my cheek...

Each night I lay under the covers,
And I plead in the morning I won't wake,
Please take me into your darkness,
I am just so tired of all of the pain...

All I had cherished has now gone away,
Dreams are a memory of the past,
Hopefully soon they will take me,
And finally I can go home at last...

Death truly hides in the darkness...

Your poem made me reflect on how interesting it is that we talk about our dreams as living and dying things - as through they are alive and can die. I know we personify a lot of things, but this is a rather consistent personification. I wonder why we bring our dreams to life, and signify their loss as death.

It felt like you used darkness in a few differing metaphors - you are in darkness, darkness hides things, death is darkness, darkness is moving in against you will, etc. Your last line seemed to tie them together nicely - "Death truly hides in the darkness".
