A Life Lived Too Late

by Once an Angel   Jul 2, 2015

Too late to love you,
the time's gone by.
Too late to hold you,
too late to try.
I choke the words down,
and swallow them all.
It's too late to say them,
too little, too small.

Too late to express them,
the thoughts l've held back.
Too late to unsay things,
born from lack of tact.
I failed in listening,
to your point of view,
lost in the determination,
that I already understood you.

Too late to turn back,
and not to give in.
Too late to listen,
there's no forgiveness
for this kind of sin.
Too late to tell you,
the apology your desire,
too late to explain to you,
the situation's too dire.

Too late to cork it,
to stop the flow.
The bottle's empty,
I couldn't say no.
Too late to halt it,
addiction's set in.
Nothing can stop
its intent to win.

Too late to apologize
for again breaking your trust.
Too late to undo them,
the lies I made just.
Too late to turn round,
and walk differently.
The consequences themselves
voice words of permanency.

Too late to forgive me,
I've done too many wrongs.
Too late to restart,
our last romantic song.
Too late to stop it,
this stroke of a knife,
that made everything too late,
in our once jointed life.

***not my best poem, but I can't find the right words. For now, these are all that will come***

    "I failed you in listening"
    - I feel that if you took out "you" the entire verse would flow so much better.

Other than that I feel that you found the exact right words and this speaks to many people in many situations, from break ups, to failed marriages, to even families no longer getting along. It's awesome, you found the right words...
