Just Breathe

by Steph   Jul 4, 2015

Emptiness,
swallowing me whole;
choking on failure,
loneliness, and sorrow.
Hiccuping heartache,
while gulping down
should haves. could haves. would haves.
Salivating to the mere idea of
something right: pride-worthy.
Yet, only spitting out
negligence in my life choices.
HEAVE-HEAVE-HEAVING
on the results of my many mistakes.
So very anxiously choking down
all the wrongs, don'ts, and whys;
but spewing up regret.

Trying, trying, trying
to breathe.
Just Breathe.
Just. Breathe.

    This is a sad one. I'm not from that kind of background, but when I try to put myself in the shoes of someone who is, I can only just imagine how unbearable it must be. Even then, imagination is limited until you experience something yourself, so I'm sure what I imagine isn't too close to the reality of it. Forgive me if I'm speaking out of line, but I hope things look up for you soon :)

    The extended metaphor here is breath taking, both how it followed through the poem, and how true to it you were. Regret and pain, among others, are very embodied emotions. You capture that perfectly here. -hugs- How do you feel about this poem?
