Friend of your demons

by Chelsey   Aug 2, 2015

I befriended your demons once...in attempts to save your life.
Slept with them, came face to face with dark eyes and haughty
attitudes of ownership over your body. I stayed awake as they
rattled your heartbeat to magnitudes of death. It was my hand
that fell upon you in prayer, releasing power from my spirit
to yours, believing He would not let them kill you.

I stayed with you during darkness once...twice.....twenty times.
There wasn't a bone in my body that trembled in fear, a hair that
stood on end, goosebumps that retracted in times of evil.
I knew it wasn't you. I knew it was their mission to destroy you.
I couldn't let you face them alone.

Tell me, my warrior, how have you done it for so long? Housing
spirits that don't belong to you. I've seen your exhaustion, your
surrender, your come back, your stumbling, your rising, I've seen
the cycle.

I've told them they don't belong here. And they've fled once.
But their return is merely to test your strength. And power and
might you have! Authority you must proclaim!

Recognize they do not like me either.
Their other mission is to destroy me in destroying you.
I won't allow it. So now I wait...on a journey where demons are not
and I pray you no longer stay their prisoner, for you belong
with me; a prisoner I felt too-
But I've already set myself free.

    Judging comment:

I absolutely love the opening line Chelsey uses here. Everyone has their own form of demons and it's wonderful when we find someone who is willing to help you deal with them.

Though this poem is filed with such sadness throughout it I can't help but still feel a tiny spark of hope seeping through it. The help offered, the determination to beat those demons with someone and setting yourself free already shows the underlying courage and strength of character.

"Recognize they do not like me either. Their other mission is to destroy me in destroying you. " Favourite line. People often forget that when they're struggling with their demons, their loved ones are too by watching them deal with it.

    Beautifully written.

When you dig deep, you don't hold back, one of the many reasons I admire your poetry. You take a personal look into what you are dealing with, and you mesmerize the reader with your strength and courage.... Your spiritual beauty shines within you and your poetry reflects that... That my dear is beauty within darkness, well deserved win!

To be completly honest I can't even comment on this properly, I'd say that i've read it fifteen times or more, each time I find something else that leaves me sad for you and something else that strikes a chord with me.

It is beautifully written, flawless in fact and it just leaves me either complety numb or totally emotional.

    You are freakin epic. Period.
