Lessons Learned

by -] Nobody [-   Sep 9, 2015

Often times we give everything and we expect the same in return
But when it isn't received, a heart is broken and a lesson is learned
We take those lessons and we let them dictate what we are worth
Because we can't understand the pain and we can't escape the hurt

We try to run from our problems and we wear smiles that are fake
Because we are inevitably broken and don't know how much we can take
We build up great walls and base tomorrows off of our horrible pasts
Because we are terrified that the next one will turn out just like the last

We find it hard to take compliments and sometimes we feel all alone
Because we fail to decipher lies from the sincerity a person has shown
It dares to question our self esteem and what we feel about ourselves
Because we have fallen so profoundly that hardly anyone can help

We often wish that we could be by ourselves and give up until we die
But we know we will never be content unless someone is by our side
So we pick up our pieces and move on with the lessons we have learned
Scared to death of falling, but still wanting someone to love us in return

Well said! I particularly related to the first line. I think you put into words the strange tug of war so many people feel.

This is so beautiful. It gave me Goose bumps. It's emotional, truthful and so raw.

Yes, when we are broken it's hard to pick ourselves back up but we need to because it's what will help is move on, learn to love again etc. We need to learn from past mistakes instead of dwell on them.

    Take care, Em

I really cant understand why this lovely poem has no comments..

I had to comment on this poem.

You poured out such heart and raw emotion within this poem that it made me cry.

Your rhyming is beautiful... It's poems like these that make me smile, not for the sadness within the message but because you as the writer was able to release and let the feelings flow, and on top of that you added a wonderful rhyme scheme that flowed so well... just a really nice poem!
