The One that got Away

by Steph   Sep 21, 2015

We were like a
Nicholas Sparks novel:
too good to be true.

We filled the emptiness
in one another's bones,
finding homes between
shared lips and hands.

I thought you lit
a flame in my soul
- and I for you.
Apparently, I only changed
the batteries in your flashlight.

We danced in the moonlight,
stared at the stars,
made love with more than our bodies.
In the end,
none of this mattered.

I simply could no longer amaze you.
Our little jokes
and history lost value.

I almost believed
soul mates could exist.
We had connected with such ease.
It seems, I was just a tree
struck by lightning;
fueled with enough electricity
to tear me in half.

You're the one that got away,
and I hope it stays that way.
I don't think I can handle
another electrocution.

There's a nice use of imagery thought this poem, I really enjoyed reading it.

"We had connected with such ease.
It seems, I was just a tree
    struck by lightning;"

This is the perfect example, great stuff!

    Keep 'em coming!
