The Last Word

by Larry Chamberlin   Sep 25, 2015

She dropped me off
with my luggage in hand;
hugged me, said,
"Goodbye, daddy, I love you!"
I replied the same.

She'd opened the driver door,
then stopped;
stood on her toes to see me
over the roof, said,
"Thank you, for understanding."

Not waiting for an answer
she got in and left.
In what world would a father not
have understood the need
of a far-away daughter
trapped by fear?

    The first two stanzas are so descriptive they ripple the reader's emotions. They left me wondering where your daughter is returning. To her new-to-you faraway life, probably?
    then the last words came to explain, and add further emotions.
    I like this piece.
