Social standards

Schools to girls:

Take that dress off
it's too short
the straps are too long
too much skin is bared!

How dare you distract
little five year old boys
trying to do their
"A-B-C'S"

You're wearing too much make-up
you're not wearing enough.
For goodness sake sit like a lady
don't slouch like that.

Stop looking at the boys
stop playing tag
stop living your life
you're just a girl.

Schools to boys:

What a man
you know how to talk smack
what "gentleman"
you are, slouching in your seat.

Your jeans aren't hanging
low enough down your rear
for goodness sake pull them down
if you want to be a real man!

Stop running around
fight with the other kids
show what a man you can be
leave your stuff everywhere-

it's a woman's job to clean-
you want to cut hair?
What on earth are you thinking
a man must burp and brawl.

School to both:

You're not quiet enough
you're too loud.
Why do you eat so much?
You're not eating enough!

Stand up for yourself
put up a good fight.
We don't allow bullying here
leave alone that innocent dear!

You don't work hard enough
you'll never reach matric!
Matric is pointless
you need experience to work.

If something is suspicious report it!
How dare you tell tales!

Society is two coins
constantly flipping through the air.
You never know where you stand with it
what's wrong is right
and what's right is wrong.

How do we expect future generations to cope
when everyday we crush there hopes?
What do we teach with double standards,
all we do is birth vagrants.

It's time to change this road ahead
before society's standards turn to lead.

This is so true, double standards attached and mixed messages that are being sent out constantly to the kids, and yet it is always the kids that are at blame.

I think you covered most of the cliché stuff, like girls and skirts, boys leaving mess etc, it is all very stereotypical, and also like how you used the double standards, of either "too much" or "not enough" leaving kids with the feeling that they will never win either way, never be good enough.

Such a powerful poem and realistic to how the world is at the moment. Also an excellent title choice!!

Hazel - I'm out of votes but this is superb and so very true. I have a daughter and dread the hypocrisy dshe will face on the road ahead. Feminism's job is not complete yet, is it? The world is still as sexist now as it ever was in some regards.
    All the very best,

Thanks bennie. yeah it's sickening! I was inspire by an article where a 5 year old girl was told to change her outfit ( a long strappy sleeve sun dress) because it was too " distracting" for the boys. so the father let all hell break loose and posted the story everywhere. it's worse in America, the schools are becoming ridiculous.
