Listen to this first.

Ice-cream for two...

That familiar sound...
the thin, nostalgic
& rather peculiar sound of
the...
Ice-cream van
suddenly overlaying the tranquil bird song
on my quiet suburban street...
:

Plinky, plonk, plinky plonk...

:

I stop weeding the garden
& quickly run inside
to grab my wallet.

:

Outside I can hear the excited cries of children.
I feel embarrassed & strangely out of place
racing them to join the eager cue...

:

I fear my smile may give away
my excited inner child!

:

I listen:

The van's gently
chug,
chug,
Chugging.

:

The lady leans out of
her serving hatch &
busily serves rosy faced
children:
pointing...
at assorted colourful pictures of:
Ice lollies & ice creams.

:

Then trickling by:
One
By
One...
tongues lick
the cold ices
before they melt...

:

For a few it is too late...
& I see the melt,
oozing... over
tiny fingers.
:
:
My turn at last...
"What can I get for you squire?"
:
"Two ninety nines with...
flakes please"
:
"Coming right up..."
:
She pulls the lever back...
:
The cones fill...
Around and around
Up and up...
ice cold cream
into the cone below.
:
"Strawberry sauce and nuts?"
she asks...
:
"Yes please"
I say with glee
:
I pay and leave...
:
Carefully walking &
Keeping an eye on them
balancing each one...

:

A lick of mine
And a sneaky lick of hers:
Mmm, tasty!

:

Two creamy whipped towers
of delicious ice-cream
:
:
Once inside I hand one towards
my waiting honey:
:
:
My motion. . .

S l o w s
&
I g r o a n
As...
:
One of the ice-creams', including
flake, strawberry sauce &
Nuts:

........................................Love is: Sharing an ice cream.

This brought back so many happy memories which sadly, I left behind when I came to Australia...I've never even seen an ice cream van over here and feel my children and grandchildren have missed out on the excitement felt when the vans' tunes used to announce their arrival in the street.

I loved the ending and can only assume that it was one of your rare summer days for ice cream to melt so quickly. Really enjoyed this one

Michael - this is brilliant and describes exactly how I feel when sneaking out to The ice-cream van! The sounds and visuals you have created here are wonderful, helped not in the least by your masterful layout. That T.O.P.P.L.E.S at the end is superb.
Made me laugh and brought back some wonderful memories.
    All the best,
    Ben
