Closed Heart

by Baby Rainbow   Oct 10, 2015

They never listen when you tell them
that people like us should never be loved.

I am like a horse with a broken horseshoe,
which everyone believes they can fix,
but they are all wrong,
because I know better.

They say the words:
"I'll never leave you"
but I've been there before
and felt the pain of
the same broken promises.

They never listen when you tell them
not to love you.

Right now my heart is closed,
too afraid of watching love
destroy what remains of me.

This is an interesting write - not least because it blames the person who was at the receiving end of your broken soul, as it were, for not listening when you had previously warned them.
It rings very true, too. How many times can we keep blaming ourselves for hurting people if those very same individuals have been warned? There comes a point when accountability has to take over - on their part too. "They never listen when you tell them not to love you".
But they continue to, then get hurt, and you are to blame again - except this poem challenges the sufferer to take some blame; after all, they were warned.
My only suggestion would be "I am like a horse with a broken shoe" rather than "horseshoe". But that's personal taste and I can see why you plucked for what you did.
    All the best,
    Ben
