Friend or foe?

Friend or foe?

How you took pleasure with us being together those many years ago, we laughed when our team won, we cheered while the foam of the beer stuck to my beard.

I remember your jab when that waitress between our table slid, she dropped a fork, bent down, her mini skirt got caught, I remember how much that bunch of ladies did frown, meanwhile you reminded me of my whispering; "Oh you kid".

What happened to those days when my genes were ablaze, you never spoke, with all my drinking and romancing, life was a joke?

I had a big fling, babes, booze and everything,
I threw caution to the wind and sea, it was my day, just for me.

You tried your best to stop me and halt the glee
but I held you down, shut you out so you no longer could have any clout!
It was like I burned you with fire, now I can have my heart's desire.

I have killed my friend, my *conscience given to me by God.

*After Adam and Eve sinned the conscience was given to them and all of their descendants. This is spoken of in the New Testament in the Book of Romans, Paul the Apostle explains how those who have not heard the Word of God but have the gift of a conscience that will either accuse or excuse the things they do, sins will always accuse.

The conscience can be silenced by willfully continual sin which will condemn them when they are Judged. The New Testament says that Jesus is the Light that everyone receives as the Conscience.

Ken I like the way your poetry depicts the reckless youth paying no heed to the inner guiding voice and towards his sun set of his life it dawns upon him that the pricking voice of his concience was actually his friend and sadly his wild ways had managed to kill that friend.

Just a thought that i have, i would like to share- At times i feel that under too much pressure of the moral policing and the number of dont's that are forced upon us by the doctrine's some times it confuses us. We blindly follow words, but do not hear to the inner voice and the wisdom we all have been endowed with by the divine.
I believe that gods blessing to man is his power to think and each individual should ask himself(his concience ) to truly think and then act.

Thank you Ken for yet another good read.

I agree totally with you in regards to "Religion" and Moral Codes, as the Bible states; The letter Kills but the Spirit gives life! Thanks so much for your great comments!

There is a saying that sometimes we are our own enemies and we ourselves kill the very best of us; which in turn pushes away the goodness of life.

Our conscience is not only our friend and yes our foe too and a good judge. For when it tries to stir us in the right direction we think of it as a foe. That is what this poem is all about. Your conscience can be your best friend or your worst enemy. A good message here.

Thanks Meena for your great analogy which was right on! I deliberately led the readers not to know that it was my conscience until the end. My poem; The road was also written the same way.
