Unshared Realities (Halloween)

by Larry Chamberlin   Oct 28, 2015

There are times
I feel the need
for special privacy;
not even to say it
in a poem.

There are things
that happened to me,
things even that I did,
that rarely occur
in a normal life.

Past years in my youth
I confided some
of the more bizarre
only to closest friends.

Couched
between
the time disbelief
turned to acceptance
I saw the changes
in how my experiences
challenged their world.

This seamless existence
we tacitly accept
has blind spots wherein

things

that go

bump

in the night

are not

pets.

So, these events became
elephants in the room,
crowding out friendship,
leaving only awkward
platitudes and silences.

Beyond
the time of belief
we arrived
independently
at the same shore of loss:

of acknowledgment
of shared experiences
of mutual integrity
of friendship
of contact.

But, then
there was
the between
and
beyond.

Okay taking this from the title Halloween and the details in short stanzas shows that there are deeper things here shared by the writer and someone else-its like hearing tales around the fire place, the spooky experience/folklore etc. But what I also gather is that as a child one grows up hearing this, it instills a certain believe and with that is how traditions are born and little fears are instilled!

Liked how you have penned this Sir for your voice comes out here and it feels like you are talking to the reader.

    Hello Larry,

A poinant and reflective piece. It feels like the between is family and the beyond the relationship developed over a lifetime together.

If not, your work is always interesting and has layers that reveal more on each reading.

    Take care

      Thanks, Michael

My mom used to tell me tales from her childhood in Ireland. The Between figured in them prominently.
