Its 9pm and I'm honest

by Yakari Gabriel   Dec 2, 2015

I don't know what you've
heard about poets,
I don't know if you like poetry
at all

but before you put your arms
around me, before you
keep giving yourself to me
like a compliment
I want to warn you
we're not all good people
we're not always candid

some of us
gift wrap heartbreak
bake cakes with grief
fill balloons with rage
and use metaphors to
convince you, that its just
another birthday party

    Yaki,

I am absolutely in love with this poem and you know why don't you? It's because of that last stanza. It's beautiful and one hundred percent correct. I relate to it because I do most of those things when I write poetry. I'm so glad you wrote a poem that resonates with my soul at this time. I haven't written anything in a while because I've been searching for the honesty you have presented here. Love this, love you.
