Temple Elephants

Temple Elephants
------------------------------

Elephants of the temple,
walk in line, we watch
The commands of the Mahout,
enlivens the crowd

Elephants of the temple,
as children gather near,
mothers' lift them high-up,
to see the jumbos' clear

Elephants of the temple,
titans of might and power
Tamed to carry the Lords weight,
pious and revere

Elephants of the temple, alas,
circle the temple thrice..
Losing their wild prowess today,
serve our holy times!

Elephants of the temple,
tusks of golden grand
adored as they march today
to the rhythms of temple band

These poor elephants have to endure the heat, the
weight and trying to be composed without loosing their temper
    needs a salute!

When I was traveling through Gujarat on leave from the military, I saw the trained temple elephants many times! They are amazing creatures. This poem made me very nostalgic.

Your rhythm and vocabulary make for an exceptionally pleasant read.
