Precious Few:

by Scott Cole   Jan 17, 2016

We only get
So many sunrises,
Hours of the clock
Birthday surprises.

We only get
So many smiles,
Hugs and kisses
Traveled miles.

We only get
So many breathes,
Snowy footprints
Beats of the chest.

We only get
So many laughs,
I love yous
Untaken paths.

We only get
So many friends,
Hellos and goodbyes
Mornings to begin.

We only get
So many sunsets,
Time in a day
Relatives and pets.

We only get
So many minutes,
But one lifetime
Without any limits.

We only get
So many years,
Steps to take
Reasons to cheer.

We only get
So many gulfs of air,
When all used up
You gotten your share.

We only get
What were allowed,
But scattered seconds
Beneath all the clouds.

Another thoughtful poem from you, Scott, with your usual knack for rhyme and storytelling. I like the short, chopped stanzas you've used for this piece - it helps to get your point across.
Well done and all the best,
    Ben
