All I Want

by silvershoes   Jan 21, 2016

When we missed you,
we used to sing,
"All I want is nothing more
than to hear you meowing at my door."
We laughed, and sometimes I cried.
We laughed at that too.
Then, what we never could have prepared for
landed at our door.
Two years and one quarter- you had died.
There was no more missing you temporarily.
No more knowing I'd hold you again.
I couldn't believe you were gone,
burnt out, my only light,
and one night of every week, I still cry myself to sleep.
"I lay in tears in bed all night,
alone without you by my side."
I wake up and reach to hold you.
I laugh at myself for the nightmares
when I forget that they're real.
The way you stretched my love and
showed me what it meant to create shelter
for a tiny you inside my heart.
I learned to put you before myself...
something I'd never done.
It's true, "You brought out the best of me;
a part of me I've never seen."
It hasn't changed that you changed me,
but it has changed that I'll never again be
who you made me.

"All I want is nothing more
than to hear you meowing at my door."

To have a fur-child pass on is devastating, this poem was very touching and had me in tears.

Heart gripping and very touching, a powerful and well written poem by Jane this week!

A sad piece, it's really powerful, although I cannot relate to the pain of losing a pet or a loved one, I still felt the author's sorrow, and it's heartbreaking. This piece just pulls on every one of your heartstrings.

I'm terrbily sorry for your loss. I truly understand the feeling of losing a beloved pet who was once a member of the family. I have two cats who I see happiness in them when ever I feel down. When I read through your poem it brought tears to my eyes just imagining them not having them in my life when they leave one day.

I just added your poem to my favourite!
    keep writing!
