The Blue Danube.

by Poet on the Piano   Feb 20, 2016

On Valentine's Day, 2016.

A father and daughter
waltz together -
smiling more brilliant
than the sun,
sharing secrets with
each other as the
violin crescendos,
loving so tenderly...

I never break my
gaze with them.
I can't, I'm too
entranced by their
innocence.

The girl in her rose
colored dress and
pink ribbon, the father
in his best tuxedo.

My heart wanders
to far away oceans.
I cannot contain
the waves this time,
all the while thinking

that he would never
hurt her...
he would never touch
his daughter.

Most little girls adore their father and he is their hero and gives them comfort. Daddy can't do no wrong. Yet they have committed a crime by doing the unthinkable. I have wondered myself if others or family members could be so blinded . How could they not know? I finally had a breakthrough after 50 years but I have forgiven him. He has to answer to the higher power, after all we were children. This has touched me and thank you for sharing. It takes great courage. Take care

    Hello,

I tried to nominate this, but I had sadly run out of darn votes. This is a classic bitter sweet poem.

The picture that you painted of a father and daughter dancing is so sweet. The way you describe their natural and free intimacy, like at that moment no one else exists. This is how it should be a show of affection and to hell with whoever is watching. I love the rich imagery describing the pair in just a few words: waltz, violins, rose coloured dress and best tuxedo.
This pair are being observed in two ways: In the first way, simply enjoying there perfect bubble, their perfect display of father-daughter love.

I can almost see a mind wandering off, back in time and to another continent perhaps?

The second way is jealousy, not directly towards them, no, more that this perfection is a direct contrast and a trigger for a far from perfect father, daughter relationship.

In an instant their dance is rejoined and the tarnished memory dismissed on them. That man would never do that!

An excellent piece, well written and with real reminder to the reader that abuse does occur in the family home. A sickening truth!

    Take care,

    Michael
