Don't ever want to lose you

by Brenda   Mar 5, 2016

I am
so afraid
to lose you-
not the "we go
into the store,
you go this way,
I go that way"
half-hour later
I'm wandering around going
"where the heck is he?"
I'm talking
never be able to talk
to you again,
never hear your words
to me again,
never to be held
deep in the night
while the night rages around us...
How do you tell
someone
what they mean to you?
What they've done for you?
That being apart
isn't an option?
That I'm scared to death
with just the thought
of not having you
in my life-
You are the very air
that I breathe
without you, I'm only
a mere shell
just existing-
you have given me
a life worth living
for that I thank-you
for that I love you
even more with each
passing day...

My husband was born with a congenital heart defect, I wasn't with him yet for his first 2 open heart surgeries but I was with him for his 3rd and latest. This poem came to me when I went in to pre-op to give him one more kiss and hug and a good-bye, I was terrified thinking of course the worse thing that could happen and what kind of good-bye could you possibly give someone that means everything to you. He has given me a life I never thought would be possible and a simple good-bye just wasn't enough. What do you tell someone like that?

    Brenda,

This is indeed a very hard concept to deal with and one that many have to, unfortunately. The little footnote at the bottom certainly added weight to this poem - not that any was needed - and left me finding it a raw read because of that.
I too often wonder 'what if' but I am beginning to understand that life is too short for those.......as ironic as that is!

Take care and all the best

Ben, Thank you for your thoughts! It is ironic how short life is, you think you've got forever but alas that's not the case. We make the most of our time together and I try not to "borrow trouble" as my sister in law says. Take care-Brenda
