Hey Emma Pt 1

by Brenda   Mar 13, 2016

I wrote these poems for a dear friend whose daughter was born with special needs. I wanted her to know that her baby girl could be anything she wanted to be. So this is the first one after she was born.

Hey, don't label me-
don't assume my
limitations.
Don't think I can't,
or I won't,
or I shouldn't
because of my uniqueness.
Don't put me
in a box
neatly gift wrapped and bow tied
to be oohed and awed over
but not allowed to live.
I was born to soar,
to spread my wings.
To set this world
on its' heels
for doubting my abilities.
For people who think
I can't,
or won't,
or shouldn't,
I am warrior princess
ready to conquer
this mere mortal world....

Thank you! I really wanted her mama to know that she had so much potential and not to mourn what she might not be able to do but celebrate what she can.

    Hi Brenda.
I love this poem. It's short and sweet. It's from the heart and true just because they are 'different' doesn't mean they should be treated that way. My brother is disabled and has alot of potential.
    Well written

Thank you both! I have twin uncles with disabilities and they were not raised with"I can't because" in their vocabulary. They were excellent role models of what someone can do and nothing has stopped them. I feel extremely blessed to have grown up not knowing any difference, it encourages me to be the best I can be too and not look at someone else as "different and unable" but strong, resilient, and capable of anything!

    Hi Brenda,

I have worked with special needs and found their strength and resilience 2nd to none; and thats not to mention their incredble sense of fun.

A warrior princess is a platform I am sure she deserves.

Well done, a strong message to the uneducated.

    Take care,

    Michael
