A Night With A Hopeless Man

by Moe   Mar 27, 2016

In the blackness of the night. He Sank.
Alone, with no reason to hold on to his sanity.
Walking the roads of regret.
Straying from his soul with every step.
Bleeding his memories along the way,
as he marches towards his end.

He used to wait the nights,
to rest upon the skies.
The stars drawing him roads
to a realm beyond his own.
Now, emptiness fills his mind,
rendering him blind to the beauty in the night.
Long gone from our world,
he exists only as a vessel
for his fears, his lost hopes and his hate.

"The sun, what a welcome sight" he said.
The very sun he used to despise.
Now something to long for,
as he only lingers in here
to feel alive once more.

    Hi Moe,
First, I'd like to say what a beautifully written piece well done it brought tears to my eyes and gave me goosebumps like one of those songs you hear on the radio that you instantly love and have to listen to over and over.

In the blackness of the night. He Sank.
Alone, with no reason to hold on to his sanity.
    Walking the roads of regret.
Straying from his soul with every step.
Bleeding his memories along the way,
as he marches towards his end.
    ^^^
Such a powerful opening stanza that sets the scene. I feel like I'm there watching this man sinking in his regrets 'as he marches towards his end.' I feel the brutal honesty of a man that has lived with many burdens upon his shoulders and blamed himself for many things.

He used to wait the nights,
    to rest upon the skies.
    The stars drawing him roads
to a realm beyond his own.
    Now, emptiness fills his mind,
rendering him blind to the beauty in the night.
    Long gone from our world,
he exists only as a vessel
for his fears, his lost hopes and his hate.
    ^^^
Another powerful stanza of deepness that speaks truths again of a man lost I feel maybe in self-loathing due to his regrets and isolation.

"The sun, what a welcome sight" he said.
The very sun he used to despise.
    Now something to long for,
as he only lingers in here
    to feel alive once more.
    ^^^
This stanza is one of hope and it shows that no matter what we go through there is hope for us all and I don't mean it in a bad way but in a good way. There are times when I have felt like giving up but then I've looked up and here I still am!

I read your poem several times and felt that the first two verses were wonderfully written. Setting the darkness of the piece, his isolationthen introducing the road of regret and the feeling of every step taking him further and further away from his soul, reminising about how he used to look to the skies at night imagining worlds beyond his own making him ignore the real beauty of the night. Then the sudden reveal that he is dead a ghost a vessel for his emotions and fears.

Then as I had fully pictured him as an empty vessel
gone from the world I was suddenly confronted by the last verse. Suddenly a sun that he used to despise became not just a welcoming sight but something that he longed for as it made him feel alive.

So it got me to asking. What made the sun a welcome sight, why did he now long for it when he despised it before. Why after seeking only darkness and solitude
did he now feel more alive in the sunshine.

It suddenly became clear that in life he had been
surrounded by darkness and solitude and like a
flower being reborn in death he had come to appreciate
the light that kept the shadows away from him and gave
him at least the illusion of warmth that was so lacking
    from his life.

So well done a thought provoking emotional poem.
