Tiny Dancer

by Ren   May 2, 2016

You do not have a name...
I don't think they could choose,
Because their hearts were too broken,
Of what they were to lose.

We do not talk about it,
Of you we do not speak,
Because just the thought of you,
Makes our hearts weak.

But on nights when I cannot sleep,
I like to think awhile,
Of who you would have looked like,
When you flashed a smile.

Would you laugh like your daddy?
All hearty and loud.
Or would you giggle like your mommy?
Barely making a sound.

What colors would you like?
What games would you play?
What songs would you sing?
What funny things would you say?

I bet you would be smart,
Nice and funny, too,
And no matter what you did,
We'd be so proud of you.

It breaks my heart to know,
You'll never get the chance,
To make friends and fall in love,
Or go to your first dance.

But I will never forget,
The sound of your heart beat,
Your fingers and your hands,
And the tiny toes on your feet.

We remember when you kicked,
Punched and twirled,
A little ballerina,
Ready to face the world.

I cannot forget,
And never will,
That terrifying day,
Your heart stood still.

And the day she was born,
Our hearts ached for you,
Because there was only one,
Where there should have been two.

Your sister is amazing,
She is growing up so fast,
I take a million pictures,
To make her smiles last.

And every time I rock her,
I sing to her a tune,
She will smile up at me,
And make me think of you.

I know you are still with her,
Staying by her side,
Just like you did,
When you were still inside.

Tiny Dancer,
Is what we called you,
Our sweet baby girl,
Taken too soon.

--Dedicated to the niece I never got the chance to meet.
Your sister lives on for the both of you.
Twirl away, Tiny Dancer.
We love you.--

This first caught me because of the tittle. It's one of very few Elton John songs I like.

Anyway. Pulled in ! Such an amazing write full of sadness and loss but at the same time it holds so much joy.

Such a pleasure to read on a dark day.

    Regards

Tiny Dancer is one of my favorite songs :) and one of the reasons why we called her that. Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words, Craig. They are much appreciated.

    Awe...so sweet...so sad...so beautiful.
Tiny Dancer - that's really cute.
Twins are definately a gift...your Tiny Dancer is no more but her sister lives to bring smiles to everyone's lives ahead.
Very heartfelt and a captivating write.
    Beautifully done.

      Thank you very much!
Losing our Tiny Dancer was tragic and absolutely heartbreaking...but we are so grateful her sister made it through and can live on for the both of them. My niece is my whole world...and I know Tiny Dancer is looking out for her sister, every single day as she continues to grow :)

    Ren,

This poem was so sad yet so beautiful. My heart breaks for all of you. You usually try to not think about those losses and when you do it seems as though your world is falling apart. I'm so glad your niece is living on for the both of them and the Tiny Dancer lives within her. :)
