Fear (Tanka style)

by Mr. Darcy   May 6, 2016

On a lonely night
the threat of agony looms
like a masked dentist
knocking at the fragile door
between pain and agony

Below is the Tanka definition:

https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/text/tanka: The Japanese tanka is a thirty-one-syllable poem, traditionally written in a single unbroken line. A form of waka, Japanese song or verse, tanka translates as "short song," and is better known in its five-line, 5/7/5/7/7 syllable count form.

One of the oldest Japanese forms, tanka originated in the seventh century...

In many ways, the tanka resembles the sonnet, certainly in terms of treatment of subject. Like the sonnet, the tanka employs a turn, known as a pivotal image, which marks the transition from the examination of an image to the examination of the personal response. This turn is located within the third line, connecting the kami-no-ku, or upper poem, with the shimo-no-ku, or lower poem.

I certainly can relate and I absolutely fear a dentist because it's connected to pain. Thank you for sharing. Take care

Okay, I am feeling a tad guilty for mocking such a fine chap as yourself. Surely it's Pimms o'clock?

    Hello Michael

You're turning them out a fair rate of knots at the moment but unfortunately I am unable to do your work justice with my commenting as I am awaiting a new laptop and am on a damned tablet.
A quick suggestion on the poem, though - do try and stick to the form old chap...:-)

Just kiddindg - what point artistic license if not for times like these?

    All the best
    Ben

      Very funny! :O)

Not your comment, the fact you have worn your poor old laptop out, and you are resorting to an inferior, not so 'smart' technology! lol

Perfect and many people can relate with the fear of the dentist. Another elegant piece and maybe not true to it's form as you stated but is still done well.

    All the best, Em
