Ol Donyo Keri 'striped mountain' (concrete)

by Mr. Darcy   May 6, 2016

Mt.
Kenya
Rising up,
High above the
National Park land.
Temperatures plummet
Around the summits, gifting
Each morning a white covered sight
to tribesmen hundreds of miles around.
Villagers at its foot build their homes there
with the main door facing her, in worship to;
Mwene Nyaga (God). The mountain's main purpose,
A worthy, most resplendent throne to survey Kenya.
The Maassai love her, Ol Donyo Keri, (striped mountain)
They pray: 'God bless our children, let them be like the olive tree
of Morintat, let them grow and expand, to be like Ngong Hills,
like Mount Kenya, like Mount Kilimanjaro and increase in number.'
Honest reverence from humble people who work the land and are thankful.
Knowledge that the melt feeds the rivers, which feeds the cattle and then feeds the tribes
of the mother land. Hear their bare folk dancing feet on rich soil, grateful to their rock

*Authors note - this poem is a formed piece, line 1 x one syllable rising one x syllable each line through to line 20. The format becomes squiffy on the last few lines due to the sites restriction on poem line length. I am sure you can imagine the mountain though without the rocky base.

A difficult piece to write I'd assume but I give you a 5/5 for telling that beautiful story about my Kenyan communities as though you were a local here!. Your description of how these people revere this mountain is vivid and on point. It's rooted in their tradition and in a way help conserve the nature surrounding this magnificent mountain.

Nothing much I guess I should say. The poem is just original, unique and quite immensely satisfying.Every little part is just perfect.
Most of all I could almost picture it for I have been to mt.Kilimanjaro and would be quite familiar with it.

    A quite beautiful masterpiece'

Unfortunately I have not been to it, but my research has placed it firmly on my bucket list.

On my personal PC I have this text overlaid on a picture of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Haha Michael your footnote made me chuckle because I can picture the mountain without the rocky road but what if the mountains crumbling anyway? Lol

To the poem: It was a very picturesque piece. I like the format and structure. You really cease to amaze me because each piece of your work is original.

    Take care, Em
