Woke

by Yakari Gabriel   Jul 23, 2016

You were a first world passport
I was a third world country
I wanted to be like you
glow like you
be free like you
I envied the way you had access to things
I did not. I wanted my legs to move as quickly as yours.
my eyes to see the world, as vast and limitless as yours did
until I realized that the only reason,
you lived with no limits,
was by keeping everyone
who did not look like you limited
and that included me too

This should be our 3rd world's anthem.
Gosh. When will I get the nominator status?! :'(

Yakari, this is another enthralling and powerful write by you and I will have to say personal, again but who knows.

We can all easily relate to this, the envy of wanting what somebody else has and though we shouldn't, we do. I love the hard-hitting ending though it's somewhat sad that you feel 'limited' especially in this day and age but these kinds of things are still happening all too often.
I love how you write your thoughts down, so raw and without holding back. It's what makes you a great poet.

    All the best, Em
