Has a boy

by Samuel Ernst   Jul 29, 2016

Has a boy
I was I guess I was raised bizarre,
I was taught young to respect women for who they are,
To accept rejection with grace,
To never get in a woman's face,
To never touch a woman without consent,
No matter how many lonely nights it really meant,

Has a boy,
"Boys will be boys" was a phrase I rarely used,
It was for rough housing with other boys, not an excuse,
I was told to protect the women in my life,
I had to be the one to lift their strife,

Has a boy,
I was told to treat all women are better then myself,
Because women are more precious then anyone else,
That the only thing that ever mattered was my name,
And if a woman was hurt or angry, I was the one to blame,

Has a man,
I now know that's not how it goes anymore,
I am not at fault for what you're angry for,
I am allowed to be angry and invoke your name,
But I sit here quietly because I am the one you blame,

Has a man....

A unique piece I would say definitely involves some form of coming-of-age mental embattlement between what you were taught and what your reality has evolved into. It's definitely a different world than when we were raised, and we're all just scrambling to make sense of it.

I can appreciate the sentiments driven to in this piece, and it's nice to see you back online and posting again!

I hope you don't blame yourself for what in life is not your fault, contrary to how it appears you were taught.

    5/5
