Forest Lullaby

by ether   Aug 4, 2016

The sunset warning
to which i heed -
her face nestled
in the dwindling horizon.
as the forest remains
in frozen anticipation
of her next move.
the instant she falls below
the wind makes itself known,
gently winding through the leaves -
a reminder to do the same.
not even the birds can be heard
as i retrace the breadcrumbs.

anxiety tightens its hold on my chest;
the trees droop in her absence
unable to stand tall
in the uncertainty of night.
her fleeting light was felt by all -
even the grass.
(even my heart).

Trees do actually droop at night, mimicking "sleep".
