This is a lovely opening but sad that you are sad. Our true friends will definitely sot and listen through our happiness and sadness.

hanging on every word said.
Looking with sad eyes.

I like this part as there seems to be a twist as in why would a friend cuddle close and hang onto your every word but then it dawned on me, maybe its a friend with benefits (that was my original thought.)

I then read the ending and what a true twist and beautiful ending, one which pet owners can relate too. I do not have any pets but my mums dogs always listen when I'm sad lol.
