The Journey

by Wayne Gates   Nov 2, 2016

I came here lost and all alone
I didn't know if I still had a home
My bills unpaid and eviction eminent
The path of my life had become self evident
I sought for a solution, but tried in vain
All that I found was misery and pain
I tried to rest without a drink
But my mind wouldn't stop, couldn't sleep a wink
As days went by I began to clear
I realized life was nothing to fear
A sense of hope began to arrive
I started to believe I could survive
People didn't leave me, I left them
and when I excepted that, I found some friends
The ones who went to meetings at night
Those who were willing to fight the fight
I heard their stories and they listened to me
And I no longer felt that I had to flee
My counsellor told me to take it slow
And with that advise I began to grow
I have been sober now for many a week
If you knew me well, you'd know that's a feat
I have a job here that's better than most
By going every day I'm learning to cope
I still get sad but it doesn't last
For I have learned here "This to shall pass"
Many opportunities are coming my way
All I had to do was learn to pray
Having a higher power and leaning on him
Has given me the strength to no longer sin
I ask for his guidance at the start of the day
And then at night I give thanks and say
Lord give me courage to do your will
My body relaxes and my mind becomes still
I now can sleep soundly and well
Knowing that I'm not heading toward hell
Service and faith are my only aims
And now I am glad to proudly proclaim
Lebanon Pines has been good to me
And it can be for you
You just wait and see

Lebanon Pines is a 90 day retreat for men suffering from addictions. It was there that the desire to write poems first came to me. Writing has become a great therapy for me.

Within every scar, healing dwells. All that happens, tend towards win. At least at last, you found release. Who believes finds life possible!

I love the spiritual message buried in it... A life firmly rooted in a strong faith in God hardly gets troubled by the temporary winds of life. Thumbs up!
