The effects that parents can have is so vastly extreme, it's terrifying. The power they have over their children is all-encompassing and so can be wonderful or awful. It seems you suffered the latter, with your mother at least.
However, when we have our own children, the board gets wiped clean and - in no small way - we can begin to put our pasts right.
