Loving you, and the ocean

by Savannah Hunter   Nov 23, 2016

I didn't have to love myself;
To be able to love you.
I hated myself.
But you, oh god- I loved you..
How could I not?
I loved you so much that I forgot what it had felt like to hate myself.
Because when I was with you there was nothing ugly about anything;
About any of it.
But loving you was like falling in love with the ocean.
It's so blue and so full of life,
The water, so mesmerizing.
But then suddenly you're pulled in
and the waves are drowning you out
and you're so deep..
You're so deep that the water isn't blue anymore, or green.
It's just dark.
And you try to scream but the dark water fills your lungs;
Nobody hears a thing.
And there's no sign of life and you just don't understand;
How could something so beautiful be so deadly?
I just wanted to breathe, and the only way I could do that was if I wasn't swallowing water for you anymore
I had to fight the waves to find my way back to surface,
To be able to breathe so I could see something,
Anything other than the darkness that surrounded me.
But I didn't die in that love.
I found my way back,
As promised.

    This is absolutely stunning, and I see you worked the ocean into this piece as I did in the one I just posted. The ocean holds so many beautiful metaphors and is absolutely enigmatic. You did a wonderful job weaving through your anguish, creating a vivid picture of someone floating underwater not dying from drowning, but from a broken heart. The love tryst with life just ironically being broken up by too much of a good thing ... or something like that.

    Regardless of my inability to describe how this made me feel, you did a brilliant job. Love this.

      Thank you so much.
      I highly appreciate your understanding and feedback and yes-
      The ocean has so many beautiful things about this. It is amazing that you can read the heartbreak I interwove into this poem, and I thank you for that.
      Once again, I appreciate it.

    Savannah, I liked this a lot. We all have had those relationships that are the absolute worse for us. You did a wonderful job putting that to words and I'm glad you made it out. Well done-

    Savannah,

    Welcome to the site - this is an excellent first post, imagery rich and metaphor filled that really captured me as I read.
    It is often the most beautiful and tempting things that are the most dangerous, I suppose.

    Well done, keep writing and all the best,

    Ben
